Hydrotherapy is a form of treatment conducted in heated pool to help regain or enhance physical wellbeing. Hydrotherapy is the practice of exercise in a pool maintained at 32 to 34 degrees Celsius. The objective of prescribing exercise in a hydrotherapy pool is to:

  • Abolish gravity, allowing the body to float and amplify the power in the muscles, allowing greater range of motion in joints
  • Relax muscles and ease pain through the heat generated in the water
  • Provide a gentle resistance to exercises while maintaining support and buoyancy to your body weight

Hydrotherapy can be beneficial for many injuries including:

  • Arthritis and other inflammatory conditions
  • Back and pelvic pain during pregnancy
  • Rehabilitation following joint replacement
  • Sciatica and back pain
  • Rehabilitation following orthopaedic surgery

Movement against gravity can be extremely painful for many injuries. Being submerged in water can help to diminish this pain due to the hydrodynamics providing support to the joints. The warm water allows an increase in range of motion of weakened joints, which increases the effectiveness of the exercises being performed for the injury.
